Thanks to our generous donors, more mums know when to seek life-saving care during pregnancy and how to prevent deadly illness like diarrhoea. Our communities have been empowered through knowledge sharing, successful lobbying and family planning.
In Ethiopia, 1 in 64 women face the risk of dying in childbirth, and newborn deaths account for 47% of under-5 deaths.
Our Women’s Health Groups, supported by Family Guidance Association Ethiopia (FGAE) Comic Relief, have reached over 12,000 people. These groups have helped communities overcome the health problems they face.
Here are some of their amazing results:
Successfully lobbied for safer roads, and a Maternity Waiting Home - meaning mums can access their health centres more quickly and safely while in labour
Promoted family planning, reducing unplanned pregnancies from 31% in 2015 to just 12% in 2019 - giving parents the chance to plan for their and their children’s futures
75% of babies are now born with a skilled birth attendant present (up from 15% in 2015) - reducing the threat to life of the mother and child
Decreased the number of babies bathed in the first hour of life by 54% - reducing the risk of deadly hypothermia
Provided an ambulance, solar panels and water wells to a health facilities in the region - enabling health services to provide the best quality of care
Trained over 450 health workers to deliver specialist and urgent care to pregnant mums and their babies.
What’s more, over 80% of women’s health groups are likely to be sustained well after the programme is finished. This means more women in the region can continue to access vital information, and solve their health problems long into the future.
Thank you so much to our donors, fundraisers, volunteers and friends. Without you, these amazing health provisions, achieved by the women’s health groups, could not have happened.
